Lecture | The Mesoamerica Meetings

On Saturday, January 18, partner Juan Miró will join experts from around the world at the 2020 Mesoamerica Meetings at The University of Texas. The symposium will explore the structures and symmetries of the ancient Mesoamerican cosmos: What are their histories, and how did different ancient Mesoamerican cultures structure their ideas of time and space? Juan’s lecture will focus on his analysis of the cosmological structures that influenced the development of the ancient city of Teotihuacan:

There are many unknown things about Teotihuacan. It is a motivation for those who continue to study this city and wonder about certain aspects that have eluded our understanding. How can such a large city be built so consistently for so long? Moreover, what kind of belief system propels those in power to remain invisible while building such a rigorous city? This presentation sheds light on these questions: through the use of drawings, iconographic analysis, and comparisons with other cultures, this talk argues that the symbiosis of the city itself with nature was worshiped at Teotihuacan.
