VIA BUS STOP
As part of a master plan to integrate the former Brooks Air Force base into the City of San Antonio, Brooks Development and VIA Metropolitan Transit formed a partnership to bring mass transportation to the previously isolated base. As a nod to the area’s Air Force history, the design of the bus stop creates a vocabulary of flight, lightness, and shade, using two “wings” to form the shelter’s steel canopy.
Designed as a prototype, the entire shelter (except for the monolithic concrete bench and foundation) is shop-fabricated steel, which simplified erection and eliminated costly field welding. At a total wingspan of 32’, the scissor steel canopy is made of a series of parallel steel tubes extending in two 14’-6” cantilevers from the shelter’s vertical support, providing shade and protection for bus stop users. The shelter meets multiple programmatic requirements, such as a bus route display and an on-site passenger information system, while also providing an inviting and aesthetically pleasing environment for commuters.
