The innovative design proposed for the Qatar Foundation provides the organization with a unique, signature building whose memorable identity bridges the past, present and future of Qatar. Conceived using the most advanced sustainable principles, the building offers flexible and efficient office space that can comfortably accommodate 2,000 workers.
In addition, the scheme provides something unexpected: a park of almost 1.5 hectares for the enjoyment of employees and visitors alike—an oasis that also serves as an ideal setting for the display of a world class outdoor sculpture collection. The park is lowered 5 meters and is completely surrounded by a sweeping, landscaped berm that provides a sense of seclusion to this area of the campus.
The most distinctive aspect of the exterior is the south façade and the wrap-around roof on the north side of the building. Both elements were inspired by the beautiful geometry of the square Kufic, a uniquely Muslim motif developed hundreds of years ago to add calligraphic ornament to buildings. It was derived from early Kufic script, rigorously set on a square grid.
